International Registrations (Madrid Agreement/Protocol)

The Madrid Protocol allows companies to secure international protection in all member countries at a fraction of the cost of the traditional system, which requires individual registration in each country of interest.

Well over 60 countries are signatories to the Madrid Agreement and/or Madrid Protocol, which is administered centrally from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland.

When making a central Trade Mark application of this nature, you may nominate any of the other participating countries, but must have a 'home' registration or application in order to begin the procedure.

The list of signatory countries is growing. The U.S.A. joined in 2003 and the 'European Community' in 2004. These are significant developments which will undoubtedly increase the usefulness of the system to companies seeking international protection of their brands.
